#VAXTHENATION

More than 400 Australian performers have joined forces with leaders of the live entertainment industry for a national campaign urging people to get vaccinated against coronavirus. Live events have been crushed since lockdowns came into effect in March last year and, according to the newly established LIVE Alliance, a vaccination target of 80 per cent is the ticket back to live performances. The newly-established LIVE (Live Industry Venues + Entertainment) Alliance has launched its ‘Vax The Nation’ campaign, encouraging punters nationwide to get the jab.

Everybody Knows

In November 2020, an Instagram account began to publish anonymous stories of harassment, abuse and assault in the Australian music industry. These were stories that journalist Ruby Jones had heard whispers about before. But when she started looking into them, she found that the allegations were much worse than she had thought, and that they were an open secret in the music industry. Everybody Knows is a new five-part podcast series from the makers of Australia's number one daily news podcast, 7am. Follow Ruby as she investigates what has held back the MeToo Movement in Australia, and whether this new wave of women speaking out could be the start of a true reckoning.

Our Soundtrack Our Stories

Join the music industry’s call-to-arms…

Our Soundtrack Our Stories is an open invitation from our country's music community to the rest of Australia to discover, champion, share, and consume more local music. It exists to promote our artists, promote the enormous economic and cultural contribution of local music, and to ensure a bright, bold, diverse and exciting future for the next generation of musicians and music lovers alike. The initiative arrives exactly one week after Jack River, real name Holly Rankin, posted the now viral call-to-arms for Australian media and business to get behind homegrown music as it struggles under the pressure of a new wave of lockdowns, all but eliminating prospects for live touring for the foreseeable future. The initiative calls for a public commitment from media and business to increase the inclusion of diverse local artists in the commercial and mainstream landscape.

Greater support from corporate Australia means greater reach for our artists, which translates to everything from higher streams and new fans to increased royalty revenue. That support could not come at a more important time, with over $64 million in revenue lost since 1 July 2021 among just 2,000 respondents to the I Lost My Gig survey. With 99% of that revenue revealed to be uninsurable, the real figure is significantly higher.  This push will invite everyday people to view our local music in a new light.

Roady4Roadies Day - Sunday April 11

Last Sunday the Roady4Roadies Group and Crew Care organised this great day. Robyn, Nick & Jamie Jelleff attended the Melbourne event along with around 300 colleagues, family and friends. We all walked from the Palais Theatre in St Kilda to Ormond Point and back in sideways wind and rain - roadies are a tough and resilient bunch! We were then entertained in the Palais foyer by Davey Lane, Mark Seymour and Missy Higgins. It was an excellent day and it was fantastic to catch up with everyone.
*Campbell Manderson took same brilliant photos - here are Robyn & Nick at Ormond Point

Live performance COVID-19 guidelines released...

Important new guidelines have been released to guide the resumption of live performances across Australia. The guidelines are in two parts:
•  Guidelines for COVID Safe Auditions, Rehearsals and Performances (download here).
•  COVID Safe Touring Guidelines (download here).
MEAA participated in the development of the guidelines and believes they are fit for purpose.
Although the guidelines are based upon medical and organisational best practice, much will depend on how they are followed by individual productions.
There are two things you should do if resuming performance activity (from rehearsal to presenting to audiences):
1. Make sure your production uses and follows the guidelines; and
2. Report any unsatisfactory requests or practices to MEAA as soon as possible.
The guidelines make clear that being COVID-safe is a shared responsibility. They also state that primary responsibility for your welfare legally rests with the producer/employer.
If you have any comments on the guidelines or want to report concerns, don’t hesitate to contact MEAA Member Central on 1300 656 513.
